Mit ihrem Album \'Border / La Linea\' hat Lila Downs vor zwei Jahren ihren unaufhaltsamen Siegeszug in Europa begonnen. Ihre Rolle als singende Freundin der Kultmalerin Frida Kahlo in Salma Hajeks Film \'Frida\' hat sie inzwischen weltweit bekannt gemacht. In ihrem Heimatland Mexico wird sie als Botschafterin der mexikanischen Kultur als Superstar verehrt. Auf \'One Blood\' kombiniert sie eine ganze Reihe von Stilen und Klängen zu einem äußerst reizvollen eklektizistischen Album. Sie verbindet die Ausdruckskraft ihres Gesangstudiums mit einer tiefen emotionalen Intensität, ihre bemerkenswerte Stimme variiert in unglaublichen Dimensionen. (JPC-Produktinfo) \'The U.K. magazine Songlines recently included Lila Downs\' 2000 release Tree of Life [Buy Tree of Life] as one of \'50 World Music Albums You Must Own.\' It was an odd choice, justified because of the quality of the music but offbeat due to the disc having been rather overlooked in some similar publications. Tree of Life was full of fragile songs reflective of Down\'s Mixtec Indian heritage, sung in Spanish to sparse, moody accompaniment. Her follow-up, 2001\'s Border (La Linea) [Buy Border], knew no borders. It mixed Mexican and American folk strains with electric/acoustic arrangements, pan-American rhythms, surprising turns and pure attitude. Then there was Downs\' voice, one of the most unconventionally beautiful in all of music. She possesses considerable range, though her voice isn\'t technically perfect. She doesn\'t so much sing songs as embody the characters whose point of view is expressed in those songs, tailoring her delivery to any necessary point between a whisper and a veritable scream. That voice remains in full bloom on Una Sangre (One Blood), a set of adventurously structured and sumptuous tunes that pick up the vibe of the last album and carry it further. It\'s a boldly glorious work throughout, seeing fit to not only take the familiar \'La Bamba\' and connect it with African roots scarcely explored before, but also re-thinking \'La Cucaracha\' (yes, you read that right) with a cumbia/reggae/hip-hop arrangement that leaves quaintness in the dust. And that\'s just the tip of it. Downs and her multinational band lay down one title track full of bluesy longing (\'One Blood\') and another (\'Una Sangre\') that struts with militant elegance, along with chiming traditional pieces like \'Cielo Rojo,\' groove-centered tracks (\'Viborita,\' \'Brown Paper People\') and an unyielding sense of abandon and experimentation. Once again, Downs assumes many voices- rebel, restless spirit, mystic, seductress, etc. -and sings authoritatively with each. Wonderful singer, great variety of music, lots of power and beauty. Es ist nicht leicht, zwischen zwei Kulturen zu stehen, vor allem dann nicht, wenn die eine verächtlich auf die andere herabsieht. Lila Downs ist mit dieser schmerzvollen Erfahrung aufgewachsen. Als Tochter eines US-Amerikaners und einer mexikanischen Mixteco-lndianerin musste sie immer wieder mit rassistischen Vorurteilen kämpfen. Sie hat lange gebraucht, sich selbst und ihre Wurzeln zu akzeptieren. Doch dann hat sie erkannt, dass Gesang das Medium ist, mit dem sie ihre Gefühle am besten ausdrücken kann.Mit ihrem eindrucksvollen Mezzo-Sopran, der mühelos drei Oktaven überspringt, geht Lila Downs Appell für mehr Menschlichkeit direkt unter die Haut. Manchmal erinnert ihre Stimme an Mercedes Sosa, dann wieder an Chavela Vargas. Was sie mit diesen aussergewöhnlichen Sängerinnen eindeutig gemeinsam hat, ist die Seele, die man in ihren Liedern spürt. Lilas kraftvolle Stimme reißt einen mit sich wie ein kalter Gebirgsbach, Schauer rieseln über den Rücken. In ihrer farbenfrohen Tracht, mit dicken Zöpfen und Indianerringen und Ketten geschmückt, entführt sie in eine andere Welt, ohne dabei pathetisch zu wirken. Im Gegenteil, sie ist humorvoll, provokativ, manchmal extrem zynisch - wie in dem genialen Stück El Bracero Fracasado (der gescheiterte Tagelöhner) - und verzichtet doch gänzlich auf den erhobenen Zeigefinger. Musikalisch hat sich Lila Downs im ganzen amerikanischen Kontinent bedient: Blues und Boleros, Jazz-Traditionals, Gospel und HipHop, Corridos, Rancheros und Cumbias gehören zum Repertoire, eigene Kompositionen und indianische Volkslieder wechseln sich ganz selbstverständlich miteinander ab. Lila singt in mehreren Sprachen, auf Englisch und Spanisch, in Mixtekisch, Nahuätl und Zapoteco. Indioholzinstrumente und elektrische Gitarre sind bei ihr kein Gegensatz, sondern verschmelzen Tradition und Moderne zu einer gelungenen Einheit. Nationale und ethnische Grenzen verschwinden, und schillernd präsentiert sich eine charismatische Persönlichkeit, die mühelos zwischen den Welten wandert.
