Banghra Music -Tanzbare Asian Beats und Western Sounds! Bhangra, der Volkstanz aus dem Punjabgebiet Indiens und Pakistans, ist in der Diaspora zu einer äußerst erfolgreichen Popmusik umgeformt worden. Unter den Asiaten in England setzen Bhangra-Künstler CDs und Kassetten in Auflagenhöhen ab, von denen die meisten britischen Popmusiker nur träumen können. Nur die wenigsten schaffen jedoch den Sprung ins *weiße* England. Bekanntestes Beispiel ist Cornershop, die im Sommer 97 mit ihrem Hit *Brimful of Asha* gefeiert wurden.
Auch Achanak haben dem Bhangra ein westliches Klanggewand angezogen, machen aber weit weniger Konzessionen an die übliche Popmusik als Cornershop: Schlagzeug und Synthesizer treffen auf die Dhol, eine große, vor dem Bauch getragene Trommel und die kleineren Tablas. Johnny Kalsi, the founder of The Dhol Foundation and also a member of the award winning Imagined Village project, has written and produced an album which showcases his many musical talents. The result is TDF\'s most intense piece of work to date. Bamboo flutes, whistles, fiddle, guitars, tumbi, strings section, cittern, bouzouki, tabla, piano and the dhol create beautiful and dynamic music. Auch auf ihrem zweiten Album verlangt die junge Dame ihrem Publikum jede Menge Flexibilität ab: ein Titelsong, nach dem man glatt den nächsten James-Bond-Film drehen könnte, ein subtil groovendes Stückchen Mittelmeer (\'Sarasa\'), einen Ausflug mit den Yat-Khas Tiolouch & Kuvezin in die Gefilde des psychedelischen Folkes (\'Amba\'), eine Hommage in Diktion & Komposition an die Vorbilder Mitchell & Armatrading (\'Save me\'), ein Häppchen Karibik (\'Ye Meera Divanapan Hai\'), dazu jede Menge Wohltönendes aus mikrotonalen Regionen, mal auf Naturinstrumenten (\'Dhamavati\') dargeboten, mal abgerundet mit einer Portion Fiepen, Knurpsen und (Ver-)Zerren von Synthis, Samplern und Stimmbändern (\'Manusoloni\', wieder mit den Freunden von Yat-Kha). Und schlussendlich verbeugt sich Susheela im letzten Track \'Blue lily red lotus\' ganz artig vor der Tradition. Fazit: Homogen ist anders. Und das ist auch gut so. Für mich jedenfalls ist \'Love trap\' ein brillantes und abwechslungsreiches Stückchen Pop, und nebenbei ein wunderschönes Beispiel dafür, dass U-Musik mit Wurzeln locker jeder gecasteten Windhose standhält. One step further along the path that stems from the encounter of the Indian and Western music I grew up with as the daughter of Tamil emigrants in Britain and Australia. After the release of \'Salt Rain\' came many concerts. While the album had an intimate feel, the music on stage became more raw and intense. When the time came to Start work on \'Love Trap\', I was convinced of the need to capture some of that energy and spontaneity and, accordingly, these new recordings have a very live feel. Many of the great players who made \'Salt Rain\' so special reappear here Aref Durvesh, Djanuno Dabo, Hilaire Penda, Manos Achalinotopolous and Vincent Segal make enormous contibutions. It was a special honour to have the legendary Nigerian drummer Tony Allen on drums. Flamenco pianist David Dorantes made us feel at home in Andalusia and Albert Kuvezin and Radik from Tuva brought a blast of the Steppe.
