Dance music and old dutch song: “Oude en Nieuwe Hollantse Boerenlieties en Contredansen” constists of a collection of 13 booklets each with around 60 melodies. These booklets were published between 1700 and 1716 by Estienne Roger, then one of the most important music publishers of Amsterdam. In 1708 Roger got a competitor: Pieter Mortier. He made cheap prints of the same repertory, and changed and improved the first five booklets of Boerenlieties. When Mortier died in 1711 Roger bought his business, and from that time on he published both editions. Madlot does not try to play in the same way as they did in the 18th century – although flute, bagpipe and violin were popular instruments at that time – but interprets the tunes in their own (contemporary) way. All the music on the CD (except the song part of Als al die eyckelen rijpen) is derived from “Oude en Nieuwe Hollantse Boerenlieties en Contre-dansen”. In 1972 a facsimile was edited by Frits Knuf. The texts used originated from 17th and 18th century songbooks, as presented in the next collections.
